Discovering and Living Your Life Mission

Personal growth work typically is inwardly focused at first. Perhaps on healing inner pain, or overcoming personal struggles. Growing in confidence and self esteem, or becoming more effective at work and relationships.

But as you continue to grow, you will almost certainly reach a point where you realize that true fulfillment lies in reaching beyond your own self improvement and self interests to something greater. A higher life calling. Selflessly serving others. Contributing to a greater good.

When you've reached this point, you are no longer working on yourself simply to escape your pain or to increase your pleasure. Instead, your personal growth work has become about making life better for others, or for the world at large. Looking back from this new vantage point, you see that all your prior work on yourself was really just laying a foundation for a new, more purposeful, more outwardly focused life.

Consider our "growth pyramids" that outline paths to freedom from pornography or from unwanted same-sex attractions: At the pinnacle of each pyramid is our crowning work - pursuing a greater life purpose.

It isn't enough to become sexually sober for sobriety's sake, or to become free of homosexual desires as an end in itself. No, this work needs to be about something greater - a greater good, a higher life path. And that outward focus on life mission shifts our entire energy and approach. Instead of fearfully "running from" what we don't want to be, or the life we don't want to live, we begin joyfully "running toward" something greater.  The draw of self-defeating behaviors begins to pale as our passion to live "in mission" grows.

This is true no matter what obstacles we may be working to overcome in life.
